Fumée 24B35 by Etienne GROS
Étienne Gros uses smoke as the primary material for his drawings, directing leaves over the flame of an oil lamp. The soot deposited by the carbon creates delicate, nuanced forms.
This technique does not use brushes or pencils. The artist refrains from any retouching or erasing, allowing the smoke to sculpt the shapes randomly and naturally.
He plays with wicks of varying sizes to control the intensity and nuances of the smoke, which requires great skill and patience. Many leaves are often sacrificed before achieving a satisfactory result.
