Biography of Mélanie Duchaussoy

Mélanie Duchaussoy is a contemporary French ceramicist whose work is part of a patient and essential exploration of form, material and silence. Attracted to clay as a transformative material from an early age, she trained in ceramics, developing an intimate relationship with the traditional techniques of modelling and firing.

His career has been built on a constant focus on the long term: the time it takes to create, to wait, to allow forms to mature. Far from any explicit narrative, his work unfolds in a refined sculptural language, where each piece seems to contain a memory, an inner tension, a breath.

Over the years, Mélanie Duchaussoy has refined a personal style, recognisable by the simplicity of her pieces and their precise proportions. Her ceramics seek neither effect nor demonstration. They impose themselves through their calm, almost meditative presence and the quality of the dialogue they establish with the space that hosts them.

Today, his work is firmly rooted in the field of contemporary ceramic art, straddling the boundary between sculpture, contemplative objects and architectural forms. Presented in galleries and exhibitions, his works appeal as much to the viewer's sense of sight as to their sensory experience.

Technique and artistic approach

Mélanie Duchaussoy's practice is based on a direct and demanding relationship with the material. She works mainly with clay, modelling it and deliberately leaving visible traces of her gestures, signs of a conscious and living process. The form is never entirely premeditated: it emerges slowly, through a dialogue between intention and listening to the material.

The volumes she creates are often slightly asymmetrical, seeking a delicate balance rather than formal perfection. This subtle tension gives her pieces an organic, almost inhabited presence.

Surface plays a central role in her work. Mélanie Duchaussoy favours understated glazes in mineral and natural tones, which never completely cover the clay but reveal its texture. The colours — nuanced whites, greys, ash beiges, stony hues — vary depending on the firing and the reaction of the oxides, reinforcing the unique character of each piece.

Fire is a fundamental element of her approach. The firing process, which can sometimes be unpredictable, is seen as a stage of transformation rather than a simple finalisation. She embraces variations, controlled accidents and unexpected effects, which enrich the piece and give it its uniqueness.

Through this approach, Mélanie Duchaussoy develops sculptural ceramics where technique serves a sensory experience: an invitation to slow down, observe, and share a form of silence.
